The White House Correspondents’ Association Dinner is like a high school prom — the real action takes place at the parties before and after.
The celebrity in chief and his leading lady will be on the dais Saturday night, but lesser lights will be shining here, there and everywhere starting Thursday night and running through Sunday morning.
Here’s the rundown on the biggest weekend in Washington since the last biggest weekend in Washington:
Thursday
National Journal’s Hotline and the PR firm Qorvis kick things off the night before the night before with a “Political Pursuit” event at the O’Byrne Gallery at the Daughters of the American Revolution building.
It’s like “Jeopardy!” — politics style. Sens. Sherrod Brown and Bob Casey, Rep. Mark Kirk, former Rep. Tom Davis, NBC’s Chuck Todd, Bloomberg’s Al Hunt, ABC’s Jonathan Karl, CNN’s Dana Bash, Fox’s Molly Hennenberg, The Washington Post’s Chris Cillizza, The Wall Street Journal’s Sue Davis and The Washington Times’ Christina Bellantoni have all signed to up to be “stumped” by Hotline editors Amy Walter and John Mercurio in “the ultimate face-off of political wits.”

The cool kids will be at the Creative Coalition’s kickoff party. It’s at a private home, and if you need to ask whose, you’re not invited. Among those who are: Dana Delany, Connie Britton, Ellen Burstyn, Tim Daly, Barry Levinson, Kerry Washington and Rachael Leigh Cook.
Meanwhile, Tammy Haddad hosts a book party to tout “Promises I Made My Mother,” by “a true Hollywood Republican,” former William Morris Vice President Sam Haskell. Sens. Thad Cochran and Roger Wicker will be there, as will Greta Van Susteren and special guest Phyllis George.
Friday
People magazine figured out a few years ago that folks are in town and excited to socialize by Friday night, and it provided them a venue. This year, People teams with its sister magazine, Time, for what promises to be a must-attend at the St. Regis. Expect the magazines’ all-star guests, plus other celebrities popping in for a quick thingytail and a mix of Washington journalists, lobbyists and staffers.
More exclusive: The very high-hush party thrown by FunnyorDie.com and Impact Arts and Film Fund. The location is undisclosed, but it will be jam-packed anyway with celeb DJ Benji Madden, Rick Schroder, Ed Westwick, Rashida Jones and more.
Capitol File magazine and the Creative Coalition will team up for a Friday night screening of “PoliWood,” to be followed by a reception at the Heritage Center at the U.S. Naval Memorial. Publisher Susan Nixon says it’s all about “the convergence of power — Hollywood and Washington-style.” Expect Daly, Britton, Delany and Washington to be there.
Capitol File competitor DC magazine will double down with a thingytail party that will serve as a celebration of its new issue and a WHCAD pre-party, too. It’s at the Finnish Embassy, showing off the MyHelsinki Exhibition, which calls D.C. “the incubator of cool.” A slew of White House staffers are expected, including Mona Sutphen, Melody Barnes, Michael Strautmanis and Heather Higginbottom.
